Electrified! The world's most powerful electric performance boat by the Cigarette Racing Team and Mercedes-AMG

Since the first collaboration between Cigarette and Mercedes-AMG, the partnership has delivered an impressive set of performance boats that has raised the bar on the competition. The relationship has always been as much about engineering as it has been about marketing as each of the boats have included AMG’s development input. With the introduction of the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive, the collaboration has been taken to new heights with the AMG development team working directly alongside Cigarette to adapt the SLS Electric Drive power train for the marine industry and thus producing the world’s most powerful electric performance boat.

From SLS Electric Drive to the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive

With the new SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive, Mercedes-AMG entered a new era: the locally emission-free super sports car featuring advanced technology from the world of Formula 1 is the most exclusive and dynamic way in which to drive an electric car. With the transfer of main components such as electric motors, power electronics, high voltage batteries, AMG Powertrain Controller (APC), on board chargers etc. the most powerful electric speed boat is born: ‘Cigarette AMG Electric Drive’. The transfer was one logical step after the legendary gullwing got an electrically-powered sister model. Once again, the successful cooperation of Cigarette Racing and Mercedes-AMG is underlined by an outstanding new example.

Pioneering, visionary, electrifying: the powerful and locally emission-free super sports car with electric drive also embodies the development competence of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. With this innovative and unique drive solution, AMG - as the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz - is demonstrating its technological leadership in this segment. The SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is aimed at technology-minded super sports car fans that are open to new ideas and enthusiastic about ambitious high-tech solutions for the future of motoring. This technology is now transferred into the most powerful electric performance boat: The Cigarette AMG Electric Drive.

Based on the proven Cigarette 38’ Top Gun hull design, this technology study re-defines how enthusiasts will perceive the future of high performance boating. At 38 ft (11.6 m) and 8 ft (2.6 m) wide, the 38’ Top Gun is one of the top performing Cigarette Racing team boat designs of all time.

Performance

Similar to today’s boats with combustion engines, the electrified boat has two independent powertrains: they are symmetrically mounted on the left and right side. Each of the two powertrains has 6 compact permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors with a maximum power of 185 hp (138 kW) and maximum torque of 184 ft∙lb (250 Nm) each; so the boat provides a combined maximum output of 2220 hp (1656 kW) and maximum torque of 2213 ft∙lb (3000 Nm).The electric motors are taken from the SLS AMG Electric Drive.

Architecture

Visually, the multi-award-winning design of the SLS AMG is combined with a number of specific features which are exclusive to the Electric Drive variant. One feature reserved exclusively for the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is the "AMG electricbeam magno" matt paint finish. The electrified Cigarette shares this outstanding finish.

Technology

The purely electric driven system is ideally packaged for the integration of the high-performance, zero-emission technology: by way of example, the 12 electric motors and the two transmissions can be positioned as close to the back as possible and very low down in the boat. The same applies to the modular high-voltage battery. Advantages of this solution include the boat's low center of gravity and balanced weight distribution – ideal conditions for optimum handling, which the electrically-powered Cigarette model shares with its petrol-driven sister model.

Design

Equal to the road vehicle, the Cigarette boats high-quality, sporty interior makes use of this body color for the contrasting stitching. Cigarettes typical sports seats and numerous carbon-fiber trim elements in the interior underscore the exclusive and dynamic character of what are currently the fastest electric cars and boats. Behind the steering wheel, there is a newly designed instrument cluster: instead of a rev counter, there is a power display providing information on the power requirements, recuperation status and battery charge.

The 6 electric motors are mounted side-by-side on the gearbox: 3 in front, 3 in the back of the gearbox creating the so called double-star-arrangement. Each electric motor is powered by its own inverter. These power electronics are needed to convert the direct current from the high-voltage battery into the three-phase alternating current, which is required for the synchronous motors. The Inverters are individually controlled by the high-performance AMG-Powertrain-Controller (APC). Each powertrain side uses 6 high-voltage Batteries, connected in parallel. With the electric connection in the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) an even energetic load distribution and symmetric discharge are guaranteed.

Battery efficiency, performance and weight: in all three areas, Mercedes-AMG set new standards. The high-voltage battery in the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive boasts an energy content of 60 kWh. The Cigarette AMG Electric Drive multiplies this by four to 240 kWh! An electric load potential of 3218 hp (2400 kW) is provided at a weight of 4833 lb (2192 kg) – all of which are absolute best values in the automotive and marine sector. The liquid-cooled lithium-ion high-voltage battery features a modular design and a maximum voltage of 400 V.
